Plain explanations of what goes wrong with forklifts, written for the person who owns one rather than the person selling one.

Why This Exists

Most of what is written about forklift faults is written to sell something.

These guides are the answers we give on the phone, written down. If your machine will not start, or the mast is drifting, or the brakes have changed, there is usually a short list of things worth checking before anyone needs to drive out to you. Some of those you can clear yourself in five minutes.

We would rather tell you that than send a truck for an empty LP tank. It costs us a call and saves you a bill, and you will remember who told you straight the next time something breaks that really does need a tech.

What you will not find here is anyone pretending a forklift is a safe thing to experiment on. Where a fault needs a qualified person, these guides say so plainly, and they say why. A three ton machine lifting loads over people is not the place to learn by trying things.

All Guides

Start with the symptom.

Pick whichever one sounds like your machine. Each guide covers what to check yourself and where the line is.

Where The Line Is

Stop and call, every time, for any of these.

These are not troubleshooting situations. They are stop working situations, and the guides above will tell you the same thing.

Brakes or steering

Anything that has changed about how the machine stops or steers. Park it, chock it, take the key.

A mast that drifts

Forks sinking on their own means the machine has stopped holding load. Get the load down and stop using it.

Cracks or bends

Forks, mast channels, carriage or overhead guard. Structural damage holds until it does not.

Leaks and smells

Fuel or hydraulic fluid, or anything smoking, overheating or smelling burnt. Shut it off where it is.

Still Not Right
